THE CHURCH OF RUOVESI

The present church was built in 1778 through Mr Matti Åkerblom, the churchbuilder, and also according to his drawings. The basic form of the church is a cross, both the inside and outside corners are oblique, the roof is steep and it is also propped. The dome in the middle has many angles. The lenght of the church is 39 metres, the breadth 35 metres, and the hight 14 metres. There are seats for 1100 listeners in the church.

The building has undergone several repairs. In 1821 it was sheathed from the outside. In 1905 it was panelled from the inside and painted according to the proposal of Akseli Gallen-Kallela, the artist. In 1865 the church got its first organ, and in 1905 the second which in 1968 was exchanged for the present one. The new organ has 28 registers and it has been made by the organ factory of Kangasala. The altarpiece "Christ's Transfiguration" has been painted by B. Reinhold in 1876, and was bought from Paris the following year. The style of the belfry beside the church is baroque. The belfry has been built in 1772 trough Mr Antti Piimänen.
